Prime Minister Narendra Modi has deplored the recent killings by ‘gau rakshaks’, condemning the recent surge of violence in the pretext of protecting cows.
“Killing people in the name of Gau Bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve,” Modi reiterated, recalling that India has been a lad of non-violence.
The Prime Minister has now spoken for the second time against gau rakshaks who targeted Dalits and Muslims having had possession or consumption of beef, sources noted.
Modi has addressed the recent instances of lynching after reports of thousands of agitators pouring into streets across several towns and cities in the country.
About 97% of such attacks in recent times have occurred after the BJP government took charge in 2014, an Indiaspend analysis indicated.
